World's Columbian Exposition Match Safe Shelf

This cast iron object is in it's original paint and appears to be from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago with a likeness of Christoper Columbus supporting a small shelf. Above the shelf is a figure of a bird but I don't know it's signifigance. I think that the shelf must have been for a match or toothpick holder. The shelf is 2" deep. There is some white overpaint on the leaves on the right side, probably form someone trying to paint around it as it hung on a wall. Maximum width 3-3/8".
